Affordable housing

'Affordable housing' is about creating a more balanced housing market, with increased levels of owner occupation and better opportunities for lower-paid and lower-skilled residents to get a home and share in the predicted growth.

Key issues

Our aims are to:

  • promote pathways into owner occupation through new financial products, skills and employment training to retain and attract working households
  • increase the use of affordable public housing, by more efficient management and by promoting social mobility
  • make better use of private housing, especially the rented sector; by tackling empty properties and improving housing quality and accessibility we can increase social mobility and meet residents’ aspirations
  • use the planning system to help provide more affordable housing
